ContainerLINE March 2018 | Electronics Board Repair Service Repair Beyond Compare: Electronics Team Breathes New Life into Older Parts With shipping lines running leaner than ever, keeping every asset in service means no surplus of refrigerated containers. So when it comes to repairs, fast turnaround times are critical. This is especially true when it comes to the electronic components that manage the vital functions of container refrigeration systems. Carrier Transicold's electronic components are designed for reliability and long life, but when replacements are necessary, Carrier's Electronics Board Repair Service (EBRS) assures customers will receive high-quality electronic parts quickly and economically. The operation is dedicated to diagnosing, repairing and in some cases upgrading complex refrigeration unit controls and other electronic components, thus giving them a second life. Among container refrigeration unit manufacturers, this specialized capability is unique to Carrier, according to Randy Heijmans, manager of the 15-technician EBRS operation in Rotterdam. Two other EBRS operations are located in the Americas and Asia, helping to keep Carrier Transicold's 14 strategically located depots stocked with refurbished electronic parts to ensure availability – even for older legacy systems. Whether the customer needs a replacement microprocessor module, a display assembly or keypad, EBRS provides the option of a refurbished component in exchange for the customer part at a significantly lower cost than a factory-new equivalent. Most customers opt for the renewed components, and for good reason. In addition to the savings, customers can have a high degree of confidence in the refurbished parts, which carry the same warranty as factory-new components. Technician Expertise "Our highly trained and experienced technicians use the latest equipment to comprehensively test and diagnose returned electronics, repair them using premium industrial-quality parts and give them a rigorous performance test before they leave our shop," Heijmans said. As some repairs require technicians to use specialized microscopes, Heijmans relates their precise work to doing "microsurgery" on circuit boards. "Carrier's team of IPC-certified electronics technicians are among the most talented in the industry," he said. "Beyond their initial education, they receive ongoing training on Carrier controllers as well as competitive equipment that is also serviced by EBRS." In the Rotterdam electronics repair operation, technician Serdar Ilbas uses a 10X-powered binocular microscope to make a repair on a circuit board. 6
