Aftermarket Parts | ContainerLINE August 2017 Genuine Carrier Parts Bring 'Peace of Mind' The seafaring container refrigeration unit has an adventurous life compared to land-bound refrigeration systems. However, traveling around the world can take a toll on marine-based units. Container refrigeration systems must ably perform from equatorial regions, where citrus crops are grown, through varying zones – sometimes as far as the polar circles – exposing them to all types of weather conditions en route to their final destinations. Containers also experience bumps and vibrations when traveling on a chassis by truck or rail and incur additional jolts when hoisted on and off container ships. In addition, the sun can bake components, while the salty ocean air and splashes of salt water contribute to corrosion. "Container refrigeration systems are subjected to extreme conditions at sea and in outdoor yards," said Sean Foong, business development and projects manager, Carrier Transicold. To address this, Carrier Transicold systems are designed to perform through the full range of conditions they are likely to encounter. Carrier Transicold systems and components are subjected to demanding qualification programs to ensure they will perform in accordance with design specifications. Throughout the course of normal use, when a part needs to be replaced, even those replacement parts – if supplied by Carrier Transicold – are made to the same specifications as the original piece of equipment. Genuine Carrier replacement components are called Performance Parts, and Carrier Transicold also provides economical and qualified products, known as the Select Line™, which provide an optimized functional lifetime that caters to older machines. No Compromising "The failure of a critical part on any container refrigeration system – whether it's a $10 part or a $100 part – can potentially compromise a shipment that can be valued as high as $250,000 or even more," Foong explained. "Carrier's component specifications are quantifiable and traceable and include a list of tests performed on parts to ensure they meet these requirements." Having replacement parts and consumables that meet original design specifications is important, Foong said, "because it assures customers that these parts will work reliably." Michael Sauceda, buyer for Dole Food Company's Latin America maintenance and repair operations, says this assurance is a key reason Dole uses genuine Carrier parts when servicing and maintaining refrigeration units in its reefer fleet. Dole does this even though parts from other providers may be available at a lower cost. "Our Carrier reefer units are a very important part of our logistics to carry pineapples and bananas to end users in the United States, Europe and other countries. We need to trust in the equipment because the fruit we are shipping is delicate, and there are so many variables that can affect the quality of the product," Sauceda said. "The temperature of the fruit needs to be kept consistent, and we need the least amount of risk on the vessel. "In the end, we prefer to go with the products Carrier offers, knowing we can trust that the parts come from a reliable source." Continued on next page.
