XtendFRESH ™ | ContainerLINE 2016 In northwestern Europe, exotic fruit importer Nature's Pride is changing that experience with a delivery model that continuously refreshes grocers' shelves with quality ready-to-eat perishables. Its avocados, mangoes, papayas and more are sold with the "EAT ME" label, letting the consumer know that they can be enjoyed immediately upon purchase. Carrier Transicold's XtendFRESH ™ atmosphere control system is now helping to preserve Nature's Pride avocados during their trans-Atlantic shipments from South America to the importer's ripening chambers in the Netherlands. The company imports more than 500 varieties of perishables from dedicated growers in 70 countries and delivers them to retailers at the peak of ripeness and optimal flavor. Avocados are among several products, including mangoes, for which the company completes the final stages of the ripening process under carefully controlled conditions. A System that Makes the Grade Avocados can last on a tree for months but can mature in just a few days once harvested. It takes more than refrigeration alone for the fruit to survive a voyage of several weeks. As such, Nature's Pride has for years specified the use of controlled atmosphere (CA) systems for its avocado exports from Chile and Peru to Europe. In 2015, Hamburg Süd and Carrier Transicold introduced Nature's Pride to the XtendFRESH system, which had recently been added to the shipping line's container fleet. Nature's Pride subsequently put the XtendFRESH system through a trial and found the results to be up to its high standards, according to Rogier Rook, logistics manager, Nature's Pride. Nature's Pride Uses XtendFRESH ™ System to Help Avocados Go the Distance Nature's Pride will import more than 1,700 containers of avocados in 2016. XtendFRESH atmosphere control systems are helping to assure quality of shipments from South America. As avocado aficionados can attest, timing is everything when picking an edible fruit from the produce bin. Avocados are typically sold "rock hard" and cannot be used for several days until they fully ripen and the fruit softens. If you want to make guacamole today, you may be out of luck. If you forget about it, the fruit that traveled thousands of miles to reach you may go bad on your kitchen shelf. 4
