Initially deployed in support of the South America harvest season, the new containers "improve our capabilities with sensitive fruits and vegetables by helping to assure optimal produce quality for our customers," said Niklas Ohling, head of container steering, Hapag-Lloyd. "As shipping patterns change, bringing longer routes, our investment in controlled atmosphere technology will provide dividends for our customers by maintaining quality for produce such as bananas and mangoes over extended shipping times," Ohling said. Jon Shaw, director, Sustainability and Communications, Carrier Transicold & Refrigeration Systems, said, "We commend Hapag-Lloyd's commitment to providing this innovative technology to exporters and importers." "By maintaining precise conditions to optimize quality for specific commodities, the XtendFRESH system will help Hapag-Lloyd's customers reach new markets through extended shipping distances," said Shaw, adding, "The system also helps to prevent premature ripening, which aids in reducing food waste through spoilage, resulting in a more efficient cold chain." In use, the system's patented, self-regenerating activated- carbon scrubber assembly captures carbon dioxide and ethylene, a hormone given off by ripening produce that can accelerate ripening if left unchecked. As the perishable cargo consumes oxygen, on-demand fresh- air ventilation automatically maintains the optimum level inside the container, actively managing carbon dioxide and oxygen and removing ethylene. The energy-efficient PrimeLINE refrigeration units on which Hapag- Lloyd's XtendFRESH systems are installed use an advanced digital scroll compressor, delivering greater cooling capacity and faster pulldown using less energy than prior models. Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, and with a fleet of 170 modern container ships, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world's leading liner shipping companies and one of the leading operators in the trans-Atlantic, Latin America and intra-America trades. w Hapag-Lloyd is committed to offering controlled atmosphere options to help its customers preserve perishables over extended shipments. The new containers "improve our capabilities with sensitive fruits and vegetables by helping to assure optimal produce quality for our customers," said Niklas Ohling, head of container steering, Hapag-Lloyd.
