Edward Goh Director of Marketing Global Container Refrigeration For nearly 50 years, container refrigeration products from Carrier have been helping to transport perishables from "Point A" to "Point B." Among the positive outcomes of transporting goods are the economic opportunities that are created. Moving refrigerated goods from region to region can boost economies on both ends and open up new segments for perishable cargo. Growers benefit, as do shipping lines, grocery wholesale and retail operations, and the many peripheral support businesses. Consumers benefit by gaining year-round access to produce not available locally, owing to seasonal or climate differences. A great example of how this works is found on page 4 in our story about importer Nature's Pride, which makes sure its customers in Europe always have fresh avocados, mangoes, papayas and other exotic fruit "ready to eat" no matter the season. All that cooling for refrigeration requires energy, and products like our PrimeLINE ® and NaturaLINE ® units help deliver the goods efficiently – and in the case of the NaturaLINE unit more sustainably than ever, thanks to use of the natural refrigerant carbon dioxide, which offers a large reduction in global warming potential compared to synthetic refrigerants. Our XtendFRESH ™ atmosphere control technology maintains the quality of perishables for longer periods so they can be shipped over greater distances, enabling growers to serve previously unreachable population centers. A 2015 report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) notes that, "This more sustainable movement of food is good for the planet, particularly in view of our growing population, in which one in nine people don't have enough food to eat, while one-third or more of the food produced each year is wasted." Yet according to another FAO report, more than 50 percent of the wasted food could have had its shelf life extended by the cold chain. That's why Carrier recently declared this the "Age of Food Efficiency." There is extraordinary potential to extend current food supplies with an improved and more sustainable cold chain. The world already produces enough food to feed 10 billion people – a sufficient amount for everyone on the planet today and for those who will join us by 2050. By reducing waste, our planet can avoid overproduction and the environmental emissions that come with it. Whatever your role in the refrigerated shipping industry, you are part of this important mission. Staying committed to sustainable solutions and strengthening the cold chain, we can all address these very real global needs. The Age of Food Efficiency XtendFRESH ™ System Helps Hapag-Lloyd Preserve Perishables for Importers Enhancing its capabilities for shipping perishable goods, global container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd has doubled its prior acquisition of refrigerated containers equipped with the innovative XtendFRESH ™ controlled atmosphere system. Demonstrating the shipping line's commitment to providing controlled atmosphere options for its customers, Hapag-Lloyd in 2015 ordered its first 1,000 refrigerated containers equipped with the XtendFRESH system – the largest acquisition since the system was introduced in 2013. The systems were included on one-third of 3,000 Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE ® refrigeration units installed on 40-foot high-cube containers purchased for fleet replacement and expansion. This year, Hapag-Lloyd is doubling its XtendFRESH capacity, adding another 1,000 systems as part of a 5,750-unit order of 40- and 20-foot containers where all 40-foot units are equipped with PrimeLINE units. The XtendFRESH system actively manages oxygen and carbon dioxide levels within refrigerated containers and removes ethylene, thus slowing the ripening of produce and helping to preserve produce quality beyond what refrigeration alone can do.
