In this role, he will oversee the creation and development, production and distribution of course materials as well as video and online training programs. He joined the organization following four years with the merchant marine, where he gained experience with the container service industry and held positions of increasing responsibility leading up to second assistant ship engineer. Qualified as a refrigeration engineer for 16 years, he has been with UTC Building & Industrial Systems, Europe, in various capacities since 2004, most recently as an operations supervisor in the U.K.. In this role he will apply his postharvest expertise to develop new services and identify market opportunities in cold chain logistics and container refrigeration. He will also support end- user customers – shippers and growers of fresh produce – helping them apply technologies to increase perishable shelf life and quality. Kerbel was previously president of Postharvest Consulting Group LLC., and before that director of postharvest physiology and technology at Dole Fresh Fruit International Ltd., where he led Dole's research and development in postharvest handling, technology and innovation for bananas and pineapples in Latin America. Earlier, he directed research and development programs for a major California grower and Mexico's Center for Food Research and Development (CIAD), following nearly four years in academia as a researcher and an assistant professor of postharvest physiology, handling and technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds a doctorate in plant physiology from the University of California, Davis.
