4 How FuelWise Works FuelWise optimization software works by dynamically cycling the refrigeration system on and off to save energy while still maintaining temperature within +/- 0.25 degrees Celsius of setpoint on an hourly average. "That's similar to the narrow tolerance Carrier Transicold refrigeration units are known for providing in standard operating mode," Taeckens said. So how are energy savings achieved? FuelWise software works by monitoring air temperatures and integrating data every minute. It then automatically determines when to provide cooling and when to cycle off the system, while still maintaining the supply air temperature within a predetermined range. "Minor air temperature fluctuations quickly add up to energy savings without affecting cargo temperature or quality." A Range of Energy-Saving Options Taeckens explained that FuelWise software, which is available as a premium option for both new and existing units, has similarities as well as differences with QUEST™ and QUEST II power-saving modes, which are also offered by Carrier Transicold. "Both FuelWise and the QUEST products cycle refrigeration on and off, however FuelWise provides tighter control on supply air temperature," Taeckens explained. "The flipside is that QUEST options provide somewhat greater energy savings." Whereas the FuelWise option controls the refrigeration system based strictly on air temperature parameters, QUEST mode's control logic factors in setpoint-based formulas for specific types of commodities. "All are viable options for our customers. The decision simply depends on the transport need," Taeckens said. "Shipping lines can benefit from an array of terrific fuel-saving options to satisfy their customers' needs." FuelWise ™ Now Available for Container Refrigeration Carrier Transicold now offers the power-saving control software for optional use with PrimeLINE ® and EliteLINE ® systems. "The FuelWise option can deliver significant energy efficiency improvements for perishable and frozen cargoes transported by fleets not already using other types of energy management software," said Jim Taeckens, senior product manager, Global Container Refrigeration. How signficant the savings are depends on factors such as cooling load, setpoint and ambient conditions. In real-world mixes of perishable and frozen cargoes, average savings of greater than 20 percent can be achieved with PrimeLINE units and more than 15 percent for EliteLINE units. Carrier Transicold worked closely with customer Hamburg Süd on the development of the FuelWise performance optimization software in parallel with the development of the PrimeLINE unit's EDGE technology option (see previous page). Although FuelWise performance optimization software and EDGE technology may be used independently, when combined in a PrimeLINE unit, they are capable of boosting efficiency by about 35 percent for perishables. FuelWise ™ , a familiar name among users of PowerLINE ® generator sets as a means of enhancing energy efficiency and saving fuel, is branching out to container refrigeration systems, as well.
