Industrial battery storage is used to mitigate the risk of the unpredictability of renewable energy sources. With its sustainable refrigerant and energy efficiency, the NaturaLINE unit provided the perfect cooling solution for TheBattery, which comes in sizes as small as 10 feet. NaturaLINE ® | ContainerLINE October 2018 5 The NaturaLINE unit maintains the interior of the container at 18 to 23 degrees Celsius (64 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit). The amount of heat generated by the DC to AC power converters within the container may require the cooling system to run at full capacity, depending on the load placed on TheBattery at any given time. Alfen offers a diverse lineup of storage systems, starting with its mobile solution, housed in a 10-foot container. These are often used to provide portable power for special events, such as outdoor concerts, or at construction sites. "This concept is enabling festivals to replace noisy and exhaust- emitting diesel generators with clean battery power," van Beek explained. "Although tightening emissions regulations have banned diesel cars from some city centers in Europe, special events and construction sites in urban areas typically rely on diesel generators. With our mobile battery storage systems, we have the technology to offer green energy to these locations. "Our mobile container can be charged with green power in advance and then delivered fully charged to a festival or event site. It can also be connected to a limited grid connection as a buffer, with the festival load connected to the output of TheBattery." "Where possible, we use multiple containers together to extend the capacity," van Beek said, adding, "We are using 40-foot containers for larger systems that provide 0.75 to 2.6 megawatts per hour per container." TheBattery can also be used to create "micro grids" to supply power independently of a larger generation station. "An example of our micro grid applications is a project for a large cacao producer in Africa, where traditional diesel power supply is being replaced with solar photovoltaic systems plus energy storage," van Beek said. Looking ahead, van Beek concluded, "We hope to collaborate more with Carrier to make optimum use of the NaturaLINE system for our energy storage systems." Alfen's renewable power supplies coupled with energy storage solutions using NaturaLINE refrigeration units from Carrier Transicold are a powerfully cool combination for a more sustainable future. w
