4 The green NaturaLINE unit cools Alfen's portable energy storage solution, called TheBattery, which can be used to provide power for electric vehicle charging stations. ContainerLINE October 2018 | NaturaLINE ® The "Power" of Sustainability NaturaLINE ® Units Cool TheBattery by Alfen NaturaLINE units earned their way into Alfen's specification for TheBattery based on a combination of factors, including cooling capacity, efficiency and, in particular, the use of ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) natural refrigerant, according to Martijn van Beek, business unit manager, energy storage, Alfen. "As energy production moves away from fossil fuels to more sustainable sources, it is also logical that we no longer use refrigerants with high GWP," van Beek said. "The NaturaLINE system's use of a natural refrigerant makes it an ideal match for our battery system." Alfen offers a diverse portfolio of power solutions including transformer substations, electrical distribution systems, charging stations for electric vehicles and energy storage systems that can store sustainably produced power from wind farms and solar arrays. "While the NaturaLINE unit has already found a home in traditional and diverse container applications where its more sustainable carbon dioxide refrigerant was preferred, this is the first case where it is being used to support a sustainable energy solution," said Fred Groenendijk, sales director, Carrier Reefers and Gensets. TheBattery is housed in a modified insulated storage container with the NaturaLINE unit mounted on one end. Inside, the container houses racks of battery packs, energy storage inverters, controls and a cooling system. Since the refrigeration unit itself is powered by TheBattery, efficient operation is essential. "Efficiency – a high coefficient of performance – and low GWP were key factors in selection of the NaturaLINE unit," van Beek said. "Besides efficiency we need enough cooling capacity to keep the batteries at the right temperature." "TheBattery," by Dutch company Alfen, is an innovative energy storage solution capable of providing megawatts of power for specialized commercial and industrial applications. It's plug-and-play energy on an industrial scale. But batteries of this size need cooling systems, and for Alfen, NaturaLINE ® units from Carrier Transicold provide the perfect choice. "Efficiency – a high coefficient of performance – and low GWP were key factors in selection of the NaturaLINE unit." – Martijn van Beek, business unit manager, energy storage, Alfen
