NaturaLINE ® | ContainerLINE October 2018 3 and phase-outs that other refrigerants will be subject to during their operational lifespan." Carrier Transicold recognized the need for refrigeration technology that would neutralize concerns over GWP – in much the same way that, 25 years ago, it led the industry away from ozone-depleting refrigerants ahead of Montreal Protocol deadlines. "In taking leadership to provide a natural-refrigerant solution, Carrier Transicold created what is perhaps the most sound investment a leasing company and shipping line can make – a refrigerated container that will not become obsolete in its lifetime due to pressures from environmental legislation," said Robert Sappio, CEO, SeaCube. "By fulfilling the NaturaLINE unit's first order of this magnitude, SeaCube is pleased to be part of this important development for the shipping industry," Sappio said. The NaturaLINE unit is as easy to operate and service as the Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE ® , EliteLINE ® and ThinLINE ® units that comprise most of the balance of MSC's refrigerated container machinery. The NaturaLINE units will be supported by Carrier Transicold's global parts and service network. "We are confident that these next-generation systems will serve MSC and our customers well, given prior extensive testing by Carrier Transicold, trials by MSC and application of the system by other operators," added Prudente. w MSC is continuously investing in the latest generation of green technologies with 2,000 refrigerated containers that use Carrier Transicold's NaturaLINE unit, which innovatively uses the sustainable natural refrigerant carbon dioxide. The containers are being leased through SeaCube Containers. Recognizing the Natural Benefits of CO2 When shipping lines such as MSC switch to equipment using natural refrigerants, they can say bon voyage to the uncertainties related to pricing and supply of traditional refrigerants that are now subject to phasedown timetables such as the European Union's F-gas Regulation and the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The NaturaLINE ® unit's CO2 refrigerant has an ultra-low GWP of 1 that is unrivaled by current container refrigerants and, in the unlikely event of a leak, the natural refrigerant would have no additional environmental impact. CO 2 refrigerant is non-ozone depleting, widely available, relatively inexpensive and classified as A1 for low toxicity and no flame propagation. "Especially owing to the growing cost and availability concerns over the continued use of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, it is time for the shipping industry to advance to natural refrigerant-based solutions," said Chiou Fun Sin, president, Global Container Refrigeration, Carrier Transicold. "MSC and SeaCube are leading the way."
